During our trip to Hickory Run State Park, we stayed at one of the campsites that led to the Shades of Death trail. We woke up in the morning, ate breakfast and decided to explore. We saw the name of this trail on a map and knew we had to check it out. When we booked the site, we didn’t realize how easy it was to get to it. Once we did, it was an awesome surprise!
Last weekend a group of us left work early to head up to the Catskills in New York. After stopping for some necessities (food, gas & whiskey), and hitting expected Friday summertime traffic, the trip took us a little over 4 hours. This was my first time camping in New York and there’s a little more paperwork involved than I’m used to in NJ and PA. We were staying at the Kenneth L. Wilson campground where you have to be registered by 9pm. If you’re making the trek up from Philly like us, be sure to leave plenty of time, the ranger came around frequently to check on parking permits, so I’m not sure what would’ve happened had we not checked in on time. The campground also has quiet hours starting at 10pm which they said were strictly enforced but we were up until about 1am that night with no problem. The only problem we ran into at that hour was a raccoon taking off with our trash bag. There are bears and other wildlife in the area so it’s really important to get anything with any sort of scent in the car as soon as you can.
Recently, I’ve been trying to find day hikes that are close by and something new. Sometimes it works in our favor and sometimes we just end up on a kind of boring hike. The Edwin B Forsythe wildlife refuge has some really pretty views and would probably be great if you’re into bird watching but we just weren’t really feeling this one. This hike was more of a walk as the refuge is really flat and there were big stretches on roads that cars could drive on. If you’re headed to or from Atlantic City and want a little wildlife in your life I’d recommend swinging by here, otherwise this one’s not all that great. We swung by AC on the way home for lunch and walked on the beach. I love the shore in winter so the day wasn’t a total bust. Here are some pics of our fairly boring walk.
